START THE NEW YEAR “A HEALTHIER WEIGH”

The 2017 "A Healthier Weigh" challenge is set to begin in seven northeast Colorado counties in early January. There will be a staggered start as each county has setup their own registration and weigh-in date. However, the educational content of the program will be consistent for all counties. The AHW challenge encourages increasing activity, making wise food choices, and living a healthier lifestyle in 2017. Through increased activity and making wise food choices, participants in previous years have lost an average of 4-5% of their beginning weight during the 12 weeks, and up to 7% of their beginning waist circumference. Since the program promotes overall health and fitness and not just weight loss, weekly weigh-in is not required. The program is open to adults, 18 years of age and older. The primary focus of the program is based on a team competition. This team format provides for more accountability and personal encouragement for participants. However, most counties are allowing for individuals to also participate in the program. The challenge program guidelines and entry forms are available through the CSU Extension offices in Logan, Morgan, Kit Carson, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington and Yuma counties, or via their websites. Adult teams and individuals ready to begin the 12-week health and fitness challenge will begin with weigh-in the week of January 2nd. All participants in the challenge will begin recording their daily activity and participating in online lessons the week of January 9th. In this eleventh year for the challenge, emphasis will be on increasing personal fitness to improve and maintain health, mindful eating, and healthy lifestyles. Participants will be encouraged to add more physical activity into their lives through daily and weekly routines, as well as special recreation opportunities. There will be some bonus challenges related to physical activity and fitness, and participating in live presentations or group exercise sessions. The challenge is conducted with teams of 4 adults. There will again be a separate category for individual participants in most counties. At weigh-in, each participant receives a pedometer to keep track of their daily activity. Teams and individuals will earn points for the total steps of activity recorded each week. Participants will weigh out the week of April 2nd, according to their start date.
Participants receive a password to access weekly information on the Extension website about nutrition, health and fitness. For 2017, the website information and recommended learning activities are predominantly new. The educational lessons of the program will highlight some lifestyle behaviors that affect personal health, as well as current research regarding physical activity and nutrition. The educational materials encourage participants to focus on making small personal changes towards health and fitness. Cash prizes are awarded at the conclusion of the challenge in the categories of Steps, Weight Change, Waist Change, and Overall Challenge. Every person completing the 12-week challenge will be earning prize money! Team registration is $160 or $40 per team member. Registration packets are available at the County Extension Office, and are due by the weigh-in dates. To learn more about the 2016 "A Healthier Weigh" challenge, contact:
